Here are a few things to think about before embarking on your electric conversion project.

This process transforms a gas-powered car into a cleaner, more sustainable vehicle. For many enthusiasts, it’s an opportunity to preserve a classic car, reduce emissions, or simply enjoy the thrill of a modern electric motor. Beyond environmental benefits, EV conversions can lower long-term costs by reducing fuel and maintenance expenses. Whether you're an eco-conscious driver or a DIY gearhead, converting a vehicle to electric power is a rewarding challenge with significant upside.

Before jumping into an EV conversion project, it’s crucial to understand the associated costs. In Canada, a basic conversion typically starts at $15,000 CAD but can reach $25,000 or more depending on the parts, vehicle type, and whether you outsource labor. The battery is usually the most expensive component, followed by the motor and controller. While some try to cut costs by sourcing used components, reliability and compatibility can become issues. Proper budgeting will help you avoid unpleasant surprises down the line.

Good planning is the key to success!

First of all, we advise you to draw up a budget. Depending on your needs and the components you choose, a conversion project will cost a minimum of around $15,000 CAD. And don't forget  to allow time, as you'll be putting in many hours of work. 

Secondly, we strongly suggest that you check the laws and regulations governing electrical conversions where you live. In Quebec, for example, it's highly regulated, and you need to produce a detailed report signed by an engineer in order to get a license plate. That's enough to put some people off! It would be a shame to run into this problem at the end of your project. 

Thirdly, choose your components wisely. Are you going to buy separate components? A donor vehicle? Do you want a vehicle with a long range? Power? Be careful where you buy your components, and make sure they're reliable. We've often found that when starting up controllers for our customers, many had bought batteries with cells that were unbalanced and unusable.

If you need to replace your battery, your budget will literally explode. The batteries and motors we sell with our controllers are tested before shipping, so you can be sure that your main components are reliable. 

Choosing the Right Vehicle for Conversion

Not all vehicles are equally suited for EV conversion. Ideally, you’ll want a lightweight car with enough space to accommodate batteries and electrical components. Classic cars, small sedans, and compact pickups are often chosen due to their simple mechanical layouts and nostalgic appeal. Vans and utility vehicles can also be great candidates, especially for commercial or family use. However, be aware that heavier vehicles require more powerful motors and larger batteries, increasing your overall cost and complexity.

Working with lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous if mishandled, so never underestimate the importance of preparation and education.

 

Legal and Certification Requirements in Canada

Every province in Canada has its own set of rules for EV conversions. In Quebec, for example, a converted vehicle must pass a detailed inspection and be certified by an engineer to obtain a registration. This process involves documentation, safety validation, and in some cases, emissions exemption testing. Ignoring legal requirements can delay or derail your project. We recommend researching your local laws early in the process and consulting with an engineer familiar with EV standards.

Safety and basic knowledge

Our aim here is not to scare you, but to make you aware that batteries can be lethal. No one is immune to mishandling, which can lead to electric shock. Our advice is to take a high-voltage training course to make sure you're well informed. 

We also recommend that you have a good knowledge of CAN BUS, so that you can perform diagnostics and configuration yourself. Of course, mechanical knowledge will certainly help you to complete your project successfully. Bear in mind that a battery takes up space and can affect the vehicle's weight and stability.
